“I am aware that I am feeling afraid and thinking about making a change and I choose to say a prayer, mantra, or other meaningful words.”
– Text from a friend via New2Recovery
When I looked at my text messages this morning, I was absolutely thrilled to read this one! I wasn’t delighted that my friend was feeling afraid, but that she had become aware of what she was feeling and thinking and had chosen to share it with me. Although we sometimes think feelings are dire emergencies, what we feel isn’t the challenge – what we choose do next is.
If I’m aware of what’s up with me, I can change what I used to do into what I want to do. With social support – through text messaging, for example – I increase the power of my chance to change.
Supporting people as they become aware of feelings and thoughts and of their options for healthy choices is the essence of New2Recovery(TM), our mobile app from Cognichoice just released on January 6, 2014. It’s designed particularly for people newly clean and sober or early in recovery from substance use disorders.
Our app is globally available for Android devices in GooglePlay and the Amazon App Store. Through careful design to protect people’s privacy, we have no idea who downloads it, just how many.
To be chosen to receive a personal missive from a friend was a thrill, too, and an honor. That our app is being used and found of value was our greatest wish.
